A drone checking out an ice crevice

http://prostheticknowledge.tumblr.com/post/138418407836/drone-flies-in-crevasse-demonstration-from

"With its spherical, freely rotating protective cage, the drone remains perfectly stable after contacts, making it completely collision-tolerant and safe to fly close to humans. It was thus capable to easily access this extreme environment while being remotely operated by an untrained pilot. The embedded full HD camera, digital live video transmission and the powerful lighting system allowed the drone to operate in the heart of the mountain glacier, tens of meters below the surface."

pretty cool. I would think some kind of climbing contraption might be better though?

Google to use drones for Internet access

http://www.engadget.com/2016/01/30/google-project-skybender/

"It's called Project Skybender, and it aims to deliver 5G internet from solar drones. Mountain View has reportedly begun experimenting with millimeter wave-based internet in Virgin Galactic's Gateway to Space terminal at Spaceport America in New Mexico. Millimeter waves are believed to be capable of transmitting data 40 times faster than LTE and could become the technology behind 5G internet. DARPA began working on an internet connection based on it for remote military bases in 2012."

This could work, I suppose. But it sounds like there are a lot of wrinkles to smooth out first.

Another use for a quadcopter?

Inspire catches Pacifica buildings on the precipice

http://www.ktvu.com/news/81365571-story

"KTVU Fox 2 has obtained amazing new photos and a video of Pacifica homes in danger of falling over a cliff.
KTVU employee, Duncan Sinfield, posted a youtube video shot by his drone. It shows part of the cliff plummeting to the rocks and shoreline below."

This is some impressive, rock-solid video.  Even though it's windy, the Inspire holds position incredibly well.

US military drones are having trouble

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/01/19/more-u-s-military-drones-are-crashing-than-ever-as-new-problems-emerge/

"The Reaper has been bedeviled by a rash of sudden electrical failures that have caused the 21/2-ton drone to lose power and drop from the sky, according to accident-investigation documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Investigators have traced the problem to a faulty starter-generator, but have been unable to pinpoint why it goes haywire or devise a permanent fix."

I'm having a problem with my quadcopter right now that is bedeviling me. But my quad only weighs about a pound.

Quadcopter with wings

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-belgium-drones-idUSKCN0UW18G

"The University of Leuven team behind VertiKUL 2 (KUL is the acronym for Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) say the drone combines the ability of quadcopters to take-off and land vertically with both the speed of conventional aircraft and their capacity to fly long distances.
By adding wings to a multi-rotor and enabling a transition between hover and cruise flight they say they were able to decrease the required power for flying at high speeds."

This looks promising for certain uses. I'll stick with my regular quadcopter, though, because I use it for photography.

Drone 100; art using quadcopter swarm

http://iq.intel.com/100-dancing-drones-set-world-record/?_series=ces-2016&dclid=COKN2sTBmsoCFQJCAQodWcsGtA

"When all 100 light-equipped drones danced and painted 3D shapes and messages in sky above Hamburg in early November, a new record was born.  Dubbed Drone 100, the spectacle set a Guinness World Record for most UAVs airborne simultaneously."

and here's the video;

anti-drone device ready for the market

http://www.networkworld.com/article/3019660/security/not-in-my-airspace-airbus-rolls-out-anti-drone-system.html

"The Airbus anti-drone system employs infrared cameras, radar technology and sensors to spot and track drones over six miles away, the company says. If the incoming drone is considered suspicious, the system can use electronic signals to jam the drone’s communications and more:
'Based on an extensive threat library and real-time analysis of control signals, a jammer interrupts the link between drone and pilot and/or its navigation. Furthermore, the direction finder tracks the position of the pilot who subsequently can be dealt with by law enforcement. Due to the Smart Responsive Jamming Technology developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the jamming signals are blocking only the relevant frequencies used to operate the drone while other frequencies in the vicinity remain operational. Since the jamming technology contains versatile receiving and transmitting capabilities, more sophisticated measures like remote control classification and GPS spoofing can be utilized as well. This allows effective and specific jamming and, therefore, a takeover of the UAV,' the company stated."

Idiot's, it has been proven, will fly quadcopters and such around airports. So of course some defense from idiots is needed.  this sounds plausible.

New helicopter that looks like a quadcopter; it's not a drone!

http://phys.org/news/2016-01-chinese-drone-maker-unveils-human-carrying.html

The Chinese-built Ehang 184 is a 4-armed, 8-rotor helicopter capable of carrying one person. Since it has a person in it, it is NOT a drone.  Although, apparently the minimal commands needed after designating a flight-path are "take off" and "land."

I'm suspecting the FAA won't care about how smart this thing is and will still require a pilot's license for some time to come.
The Guangzhou, China-based company pulled the cloth off the Ehang 184 at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the CES gadget show. In a company video showing it flying, it looks like a small helicopter but with four doubled spinning parallel to the ground like other drones.

Stop droning near airports!

http://www.sfchronicle.com/news/article/Plane-lands-safely-at-Logan-after-drone-spotted-6732471.php

"BOSTON (AP) — Officials say an airplane has landed safely at Logan International Airport after a drone was spotted near its flight path.
The Boston Globe reports (http://bit.ly/1P8yc2N ) the Federal Aviation Administration says a JetBlue crew reported seeing an unmanned aircraft as it approached to land at Logan Airport around 12:15 p.m. Friday."

The rules are clear!  "Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying."  I hope the idiots doing this are caught and punished. The rest of us like flying and don't want idiots spoiling it for us.
